TITLE: ABILITY TO BENEFIT

Linn-Benton Community College is committed to providing students with access to higher education. The college attempts to provide a full range of options which affords educational opportunities for everyone.

In accordance with the federal government's regulations, the college has agreed to make federal financial aid available, within the limits of existing resources, to eligible students who have demonstrated the "ability to benefit" from regular credit classes. Students will be assessed by a nationally recognized placement exam developed by the Educational Testing Service and if the test scores indicate that the student should be placed in the "guided studies" program (non-credit courses), an interview with a counselor will take place. If, after reviewing the test scores and meeting with the student, the counselor determines that the student should start in non-credit improvement classes, the student will be placed in the Guided Studies Program. Students who improve their skills sufficiently to pass the GED, or through additional testing, demonstrate that their skill level has improved to a level of preparedness to enroll in regular credit classes, will be determined to have the "ability to benefit" and be eligible to receive federal student financial aid.
