DEIT Subcommittee Reports:

  • Training Subcommittee (Ann Adams): Ann reported that at this time she is the sole person on this committee. She is continuing with Technology Tips of the week with help from staff, and asked for input regarding fall in-service activities. Should we look at a "technology tiger" type event or something on a smaller scale such as morning and/or afternoon workshops? Carol Schaafsma suggested breaking the event down into activities that would demonstrate hands-on technology. Such training could include Groupwise, MS Word tips, media carts, Roadmap, Blackboard etc. Beth asked Paul Snyder, Ann Adams and Carol Schaafsma to work on ideas together for fall in-service.

  • Technology Initiatives Committee (Diane Bauer and Linda Carroll): Diane distributed a handout of four primary goals this committee has been working on. This handout is available by request through Lori Rowton in Media Services. The first goal involved looking at standards for planning, developing, assessing and evaluating distributed learning projects by studying the 24 benchmarks (seven primary areas) outlined in the executive summary from the Institute for Higher Education Policy 2000 (IHEP). As a result, they feel that the IHEP list provides a good framework to use while evaluating where the college is now and where the gaps and processes for distributed ed need more work.
Their second goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of course management software (Blackboard) in a pilot project. The Media Dept. has purchased the software and will attempt to get it up and running during winter term 2003. She added that the Nursing Department plans to use Blackboard for two fully on line courses winter term. Essentially the third and fourth goals of this subcommittee include establishing criteria for evaluating quality distributed instruction and identifying the current distributed classes and how these classes help students meet their educational goals. Kate Johnson in Media Services has developed an online interface for viewing distance education survey data to assist with this evaluation process.

  • Strategic Planning (Beth Camp): Beth reported that this committee has met several times over Fall and Winter terms to develop and review formal operating guidelines for DEIT that can be approved as part of the College Rule process. Beth distributed copies of the DEIT Operating Guidelines to the committee members to review and approve. Ann Adams made motion to approve the guidelines; Diane Bauer seconded the motion. Beth added that the subcommittee has been developing a process for thinking strategically about distributed learning by drafting a list of strategic questions that could be used to assist with the planning and evaluating for distributed learning. The full document offers a list of nearly 100 questions that can be used by DEIT subcommittees (and interested others) to aid in their planning, evaluating, and goal setting related to distributed learning. The hope is that sections of the document will be used selectively to help refine planning by DEIT ubcommittees (and interested others), to help evaluate current policies and practices related to distributed learning, and to clarify the future vision for distributed education at LBCC. Please find attached to these minutes a copy of the strategic questions document as well as the current operating guidelines for DEIT.

  • Student Support (Diane Watson and Marlene Propst): Marlene gave an update on the Web Presence 2002-2003 project list generated earlier this year. The plan to merge Roadmap and the on-line schedule will be implemented by summer term. Marlene also reports that Ann Adams is looking at different options for developing a system to take credit card payments through SIS, and the Online Career Center will be up soon. The Foundation office is gathering information to assist with the development and implementation of a searchable scholarship database. In the interim, Sheryl Clemetson has set up some files with links. The revisions for the online orientation are moving ahead, and the paperless office is in the process of being updated. Though several forms and board policies are up to date, the administrative rules are not. The timeline for working out an administrative rules update is yet to be determined. Joe Sherlock will do a campus wide paperless office survey once the updates to the administrative rule are complete. Marlene also noted that the nursing boot camp for online courses, which includes how to cut and paste, email, etc., was a big success. Staff attending the training were pleased and enthusiastic to recommend it to other instructors for their courses. As a final note, permission to develop web-based grading has been granted by the Academic Affairs office.

NEXT MEETING: DEIT's next meeting will be held February 28 of winter term in T119, from 3-4:00pm.
