DISTANCE EDUCATION & INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE
June 6, 1997

Present: Marti Ayers, John Berg, Beth Camp, Mike Holland, Ron Sharman, Christina Salter, Ann Smart, Joe Sherlock, Paul Snyder, Diane Watson, Ed Watson, Peggy Weems

Beth reviewed the list of unresolved issues from our fall term list and noted how much we had accomplished. Next year we are offering 84 classes instead of the 25 this year.

Next year we need to focus on Instructional Technology, Training and Student Support.

Homework/Fall Planning Session

Beth distributed a questionnaire that she had adopted from one used in Idaho that she received at the Distance Conference in Washington this spring. Please complete it on the Scantron form, include your name and any comments and return it to Paul Snyder. Beth needs to know if you want to continue on the committee or have a suggested person to replace you.

The group agreed to use the questionnaire as the basis of our fall planning session. From it we will do the STP (Strategy Target Plan) process that we did two years ago when we created our planning document. The fall planning session will be from 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon on September 17 followed by lunch hosted by Ann Smart.

Appreciation

Beth presented Evonne a token of our appreciation for all of her work on behalf of the committee. Beth also shared a letter she wrote Jon Carnahan on behalf of the committee commending the efforts of the entire Media staff for their outstanding support of distance education and instructional technology and their strong team approach. She also had a gift for them.

Computer Competency

Beth shared the memo written by the Computer Competency Committee, a joint DEIT and Curricular Issues committee. Curricular Issues seemed to like the competencies the committee developed but has work it wants to do on procedures. Therefore, they will still be working on it in the fall. The feeling is that the new model will be more flexible when we need to make changes.

Training

Paul and Marti distributed flyers on the OSU distance teaching seminar September 9-11. It is highly recommended by our faculty who have attended. Gary Ruppert attended prior to teaching his Ed-Net class.

Marti said there are lots of questions on workload and people feeling overwhelmed with distance delivery. We are giving release to develop but not to maintain. Faculty feel that maintaining a Web presence is more than an office hour. Paul and Ron talked about faculty needing more training on how to more efficiently manage a Web presence so that it isn't so overwhelming. Distance teaching/Web maintenance is also an issue for part-time faculty. Workload is an issue that needs more clarity.

FCC License for ITFS

Paul shared that we had received our license for the modifications and that ATI could start building the ITFS digital system.

Title III

Ann shared that there will be proposals accepted next spring for about 60 new Title III grants. Distance Education and Technology seem to be the hot topics according to Cynthia's source. Beth suggested that we should consider combining that with the Workforce Policy Council's efforts.

Next meeting will be in the Willamette Room from 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon on September 17 followed by lunch.
