Software Installation Guidelines

Do you ever request software installation?
The Computer Lab Support Specialists have established these guidelines to assist in supporting the increasing technology needs of instructors for computer software installation/use by their students.

Following this overview you will find the form you need to use if you wish to have computer software available in computer labs for your students to use. By following these software installation guidelines we can accommodate most requests. Please understand that some software may not be able to be successfully installed on our lab machines.

How do I get software installed in a lab?
Click on the On-line form link at the bottom of this page to open and fill out the request form. Be sure to check the box of the appropriate lab(s) contact person for the area that you wish to have your software installed. You may check more than one lab contact if you need the software installed in multiple locations.

Why some software may not be installed:
The addition of some applications or web plugins can cause security breaches in the college computer systems, and can make the information stored on computers available for off-campus unauthorized access.

Shareware programs usually require licensing after a set time limit and Linn-Benton Community College can be held accountable for unlicensed software. Shareware and freeware programs can also cause disruption with system files and can harbor viruses.

Computer disks or CD's included in textbooks often require the user to install a simple setup program to be able to access the data on the CD. Installations of these programs can over-write system files on the target computer(s) and can cause unexplained system crashes, and/or existing software to not function as desired.

How do the computer lab specialists solve these problems?
We install and test the software on a machine before installing it in the lab. We may ask you to test it also.

When do I need to make my request for software installation?
We need to receive your request and the software itself (with proof of licensing) no later than 5 weeks before the term you need to use it starts. The recommended timeframe is to turn in your SIRF when you do your book orders for the next term.

What happens if I don't meet the deadline for turning in the SIRF?

We will make every effort to install the software in a timely manner to minimize the impact on the students' learning experience.

However, the later the SIRF is received after the deadline, the less likely your request can be fulfilled by the beginning of the next term. It may be one to two weeks before the software can be tested and installed in the requested locations. We still reserve the right to deny the request if our testing shows it will cause problems for any of the already installed software applications.

Also, if Information Services is called in to help get the software installed in a timely manner and overtime is involved, the Department or Division requesting the software will be charged back for that time. There may also be a charge from the corresponding Computer Lab Specialist's department if overtime is incurred.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Department or Division requesting this software to be installed is responsible for the purchase and maintenance of the software licenses. The Computer Lab Specialists will not install software without a valid license!
